＜Fretting Wear Resistance Coating＞
Fretting refers to wear and sometimes corrosion damage at the contact surfaces. This damage is induced under load and in the presence of repeated relative surface motion, as induced for example by vibration. The ASM Handbook defines fretting as "A special wear process that occurs at the contact area between two materials under load and subject to minute relative motion by vibration or some other force". Thermal spray coatings with good toughness and low residual tensile stress are good to resist wear from repeated sliding and impacting.
Fretting is a potential problem at all interfaces. For instance, vibrations, fluctuating loads and misalignments between aircraft structural parts and engine assemblies components promote oscillatory sliding between contacting surfaces. There are two significant effect from fretting. First, the loss of interfacial fits or clearances due to fretting wear can lead to increased vibration and result to component failure ultimately. That might occurs at a location far from the site of the fretting wear. Moreover, it's possible that fatigue strength of parts reduce directly due to fretting wear at the interfaces. The fatigue strength reduction resulted from fretting wear may initiate crack at the contacting surfaces. Therefore, a propagated crack or early failure might occurs due to the stress  of the fretted components.
Coatings used for fretting wear resistance includes cermet (tungsten carbide- cobalt), chromium carbide-nickel chromium (for high temperatures above 550℃), self-fluxing alloys, aluminum bronze copper nickel indium, and some alloys such as iron, nickel, chromium or cobalt.
